Introduction to Chishui Danxia Tourist Area
Chishui Danxia Tourist Area, located in the south of Chishui City, Guizhou Province, Covering an area of over 36.3sq km, including the Great waterfall , Buddha Light Rock and Swallow Rock. Features Danxia landforms, waterfalls, bamboo forests, Spinulose tree ferns and primeval forests, and hosts rare animals and plants, villages, mountains, valleys, waterfalls, lakes, rivers and other landscapes. It is the epitome of Chishui, which is home to thousands of waterfalls, Danxia landforms, bamboos and Spinulose tree ferns, and is one of the world’s most typical and beautiful Danxia areas of ecological diversity featuring the best integration of mountains, waters and forests.

The Chishui Danxia Tourist Area, hosting bright red Danxia cliffs, isolated peaks, rocks of grotesque shapes, huge caves and beautiful Danxia valleys, green forests, waterfalls and springs, is extremely eye-catching and attractive.
1. China’s best Danxia area
A rare vegetated Danxia area in the world
Chishui Danxia not only involves Danxia landforms. It is one of the world’s most typical and beautiful Danxia areas of ecological diversity featuring waterfalls, wetlands, forests and other natural landscapes. Most uniquely, here Danxia landforms coexist with 2,359 species of animals and plants, including rare and endangered ones. Set off by primeval forests, bamboo forests and alsophila spinulosa, it is like rubies dotting an oasis.
China’s largest Danxia area
Covering an area of over 1,300 sq km, Chishui Danxia, a typical Danxia landform that is in its early youth, is the largest and most beautifully and spectacularly well-developed of its kind in China known as “No. 1 Danxia in China”. The core Chishui Danxia area, measuring 273.64 square km, is the largest among the six component parts of China Danxia, a serial natural World Heritage property and China’s eighth natural World Heritage site. August 2nd,2010. The other five component parts are Langshan Mountain in Hunan, Danxiashan Mountain in Guangdong, Taining in Fujian, Longhushan Mountain in Jiangxi, and Jianglangshan Mountain in Zhejiang.
The Buddha Light Rock, a Danxia landscape
Known as “the best example of Danxia landforms in the world”, the Buddha Light Rock is arc shaped. The arc is 1,117 m long, and the drop height is 385m. The rock formed as early as in the Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods. It looks like a red wordless book from heaven opened in the air coloured red using the blood of dinosaurs right before their extinction. In the middle of the Buddha Light Rock is a 269 m and 42 m wide waterfall, looking like a little white dragon flying down from red clouds. In the afternoon, when the sun shines on the Buddha Light Rock, the red cliff and the snow-white waterfall will blend into a whole, and a five coloured halo will appear in the white clouds crowning the cliff.
The Five-Pillar Peaks, a Danxia landscape
The Five-Pillar Peaks refer to the five pillar-like Danxia peaks covered by numerous ferns and vines beautifully contrasting exposed red cliffs. In addition, red cliffs, valleys, caves and other forms of Danxia units dot primeval forests, bamboo forests and alsophila spinulosa, looking like rubies dotting an oasis.

3. Alsophila spinulosa, the king of ferns
Beautifully strong, tall and straight
Alsophila spinulosa is a surviving preglacial plant. It is normally 3-5 m tall, and can be as tall as nearly 10 m. Known as ”the king of ferns”, it is evergreen, and has a woody, trunklike stem and a terminal crown of large, pinnately divided fronds, looking like a huge umbrella.
A living plant fossil
Alsophila spinulosa flourished as early as in the Jurassic Period of the Mesozoic Era 180 million years ago. Tree ferns coexisted with dinosaurs. After the Quaternary glaciation, alsophila spinulosa has only survived in some lower latitudes until today, and is a kind of rare and threatened plant under first class protection in China.
4. Vast bamboo forests
Chishui is home to bamboo, hosting more than 40 species of bamboo in 12 genera. The Chishui Danxia Tourist Area hosts bamboo forests covering a total area of more than 6,667 ha. Strolling along the paths in bamboo forests, you can breathe fresh air and smell the fragrance of wild flowers.
